Congress Vs ‘Indu Sarkar’: Sanjay Nirupam Sends Letter To Censor Board, Demands Screening

Published on 5 July, 2017 at 6:00 pm By

Madhur Bhandarkar, known for his hard-hitting movies on real life stories, is all set to tell the tale of India during the Emergency. How can a movie so politically charged hit cinema halls without hitting a number of controversies and objections first? In latest developments, a Congress member has come forward with his apprehensions regarding the movie.

The President of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee and Ex-Member of Parliament, Sanjay Nirupam has sent a letter to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) asking for a screening Of ‘Indu Sarkar’ before it gets censored. To make sure that Congress leaders are “not shown in bad light” has been stated as the reason for the request.

The imposition of Emergency in India is considered to be the “the darkest period in Indian democracy” which stayed for 21 months. The Government of India, under the Congress rule, curbed the civil rights of people across the country. Madhur Bhandarkar has previously stated that the motive behind this project has been to educate the new generation about such a historically important phase of the country. When asked about organizing a special screening for Sanjay Nirupam, he told NDTV,

No, I don’t intend to… everyday, somebody comes up with some problem.

The Congress Party’s apprehensions about the movie are quite visible from the very beginning. Only some time back, Congress spokesperson Jyotiraditya Scindia accused ‘Indu Sarkar’ for being “fully sponsored”. And that they (Congress) “totally condemn the false depictions in the film”.

Aware of the political drama unfolding around his film, Madhur Bhandarkar said in the past,

There are many objections. The politicians have not seen the movie. They have only seen the trailer and they are objectifying saying they will take legal action against me. But then the final decision on what to retain in the film and what to edit will only happen once the film is censored.

Where Congress is on its heels to get the movie twisted their way, CFBC Chief, Pahlaj Nihalani, said that Madhur Bhandarkar doesn’t need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for ‘Indu Sarkar’.  Amidst continuous dialogue, the anticipation has increased among movie-goers. The movie is set to release on July 28, 2017.
