2018 saw some of the great movies which were commercially, as well as, critically acclaimed. To think that there have been many movies which were exemplary this year, makes me want to appreciate the effort which really goes into filmmaking. From Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum-opus, Padmaavat to Meghna Gulzar’s blockbuster movie, Raazi; there have been movies which are nothing but splendid. It’s not wrong to say that these movies deserve an Oscar! Oh, speaking of Oscar did you know about India’s Oscar 2019 entry?
Yes, I am talking about ‘the Oscars’. One of the most prestigious awards of all time. But hold on! It’s neither Padmaavat nor Raazi which is making its way to represent India at Oscars 2019. No, it’s not Gold either, Oh, and if you are rooting for Manto, then that’s a wrong guess too!
So, you must be wondering which movie is it! Well, it seems that with its phenomenal content, and perfect execution Rima Das’s Village Rockstars has made its way to represent India in 2019 Oscars. It topped the chart from a total of 29 entries.
Now many of you must be wondering why this happened. Well before we get into all that, let’s take a quick look at these honourable mentions which made their way to the consideration.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum-opus Padmaavat is a force to reckon with when it comes to Hindi cinema. Despite numerous controversies surrounding the same, the movie did really well at the box office and was very well received by the audiences.
Undoubtedly, Gold is one of the most successful movies of 2018. The historical sports-drama directed by
Reema Kagti starred Bollywood’s khiladi Akshay Kumar. Needless to say that this movie is a part of the hundred crore club.
We all know how Alia Bhatt has won many hearts with Meghna Gulzar’s directorial Raazi! This spy thriller film with its jaw-dropping plot has been appreciated by the critics and audiences alike.
The biographical drama film directed by Nandita Das is based on the life of a famous Urdu author Saadat Hasan Manto. With its strong content, it’s not difficult to understand that why it was in the list of consideration.
Now talking about Village Rockstar!
If you want to sum up Village Rockstars in a word, I would rather say it is mesmerizing. The Assamese feature has raked in many awards due to its strong content. The film beautifully portrays the story of a girl named Dhanu from a small village in Assam, and how she dreams of forming a rock band against the odds. Got goosebumps right?
I bet this movie can stir the latent emotions within anyone. In fact, this movie has bagged the Best Feature Film ‘Swarna Kamal’ award at the 65th National Film Awards at New Delhi. Not only this, this coming-of-age film has been a part of more than 70 film festivals around the world.
Given these factors and of course the beautiful execution, I think that it should not come as a shocker why Village Rockstars made its way to the Oscars. The film will represent India at the 91st Academy Awards next year in the Best Foreign Language category. Fingers crossed! Not only this, it seems that even eminent personalities and netizens are batting for the same:
The movie deserves to be in Oscars!
I am so Flummoxed reading this! The governments have so much money to promote themselves putting posters all across! 👉 After selecting Village Rockstars, jury says there’s acute lack of funds to promote film at Oscars | The Indian Express https://t.co/czyTcxlmzy

What do you mean “our Oscar thingy”? It should be a matter of pride for the entire country that a young girl with no background or training in filmmaking makes an incredible film like Village Rockstars that compels the jury to select it for the Oscars. Let’s not be myopic.. https://t.co/nXl6eJoOPp

Heartening to learn that @rimadasFilm #VillageRockstars is India’s official entry to Best Foreign Film category for #Oscars2019. A brilliant story of a girl who grows up in poverty & learns to fend for herself, this is 1st Assamese film to be nominated for @Oscars2019s. Proud! pic.twitter.com/BQsNPURPPR

What an Outstanding News…I was 100% Sure that this film would definitely enter the OSCAR as an Indian Official Entry for 2019….. Immensely Happy for the entire team of Village Rockstars… Congratulations Rima Das..I had done the Sound Design of Village Rockstars

.@rimadasFilm ‘s VILLAGE ROCKSTARS is probably the biggest success story of 2018. Written, directed, shot, edited, & produced by a single woman with a cast of non-actors on a microbudget. From that to a National Award for Best Film and now India’s #Oscar Submission. Unbelievable

We are excited too!
Still not a chance for me, you don’t have any idea how excited I’m to see this movie. I definitely will when I go home once. I’m in Vellore right now & there are no screenings here. 😫 I so wished I was living among these 7 cities in which #VillageRockstars is screened.
