The western world has had its gay anthems for decades now. From ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’ and Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive’, to Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’, the LGBT community has found music it can relate to, anthems it can sing with pride.
Chennai-based actor, filmmaker and activist, Malini Jeevarathnam, released a music video, giving India it’s first, and only, ‘Lesbian Anthem’.
Malini, who is from Tamil Nadu, says she made the ‘Lesbian Anthem’ music video to reach out to a wider audience. Through this video, she wants to emphasize the fact that lesbian love exists in India across class and rural-urban divides, and that it is not the limited to westernized upper class women, as some would like to believe.

It’s about time QueerIndia was represented in mass media, and the stories of the marginalized told. Here’s hoping this video marks the start of a new, proud, chapter for the gay community in India.
