Would you believe me if I said many of our Indian politicians once worked as waitress, clerk, dish washer or a stock broker? These Indian politicians have worked really hard and it was only then they tried their luck in politics. Have a look at some of the Indian politicians and what they did before entering politics:
Born to a family of grocers, Narendra Damodardas Modi is the current Prime Minister of India. As a child, he helped his father sell tea at the Vadnagar Railway Station, and later ran a tea stall with his brother near a bus terminus.
Born to a Bengali Brahmin family, current President of India, Pranab Mukherjee used to work as an upper-division clerk in the office of the Deputy Accountant-General (Post and Telegraph) in Calcutta. In 1963, he began teaching political science at Vidyanagar College.
The only person to get re-elected for the post of Vice President of India after Dr Radhakrishna, Ansari started his career working as an officer in the Indian Foreign Service in 1961.
It was reported that Sonia Gandhi used to work as a waitress in The Varsity Hotel, a Greek restaurant where she met a young engineering student – Rajiv Gandhi.
After completing his PhD, Manmohan Singh worked as a professor of International Trade at the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi.
The only woman to hold the highest office, Pratibha Patil used to cook food and wash dishes for former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi after she lost the 1977 elections.
The current president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Amit Shah was born into a well-to-do Gujarati family. He used to work for his father’s business, as a stockbroker and in co-operative banks in Ahmadabad.
Born in a middle class family, the current Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal joined Tata Steel as a mechanical engineer in 1989. Kejriwal joined the Indian Revenue Service as an Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax in 1995 after qualifying through the Civil Services examination.
Endearing himself as a typical Bihari, Nitish Kumar started his career working in the Bihar State Electricity Board as part of the Indian Engineering Service.
The current Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Smriti Irani used to scrub floors and worked as a waitress in McDonald’s after which she was offered a part in a daily soap called ‘Kyuki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’.
Lalu Prasad Yadav used to work as a clerk at the Bihar Veterinary College, Patna where his elder brother also worked as a peon.
Four times CM of Uttar Pradesh, Kumari Mayawati completed her BEd and worked as a teacher at Inderpuri JJ Colony, Delhi. Meanwhile, she was also preparing for her IAS exams.
As a college student, the current CM of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, worked as an active member of the ABVP. At the ABVP, he started as a grassroots worker where he painted walls and stuck promotional posters for politicians.
Often called ‘Emperor of Hindu hearts’, Bal Thackeray started his career working as a cartoonist for an English daily newspaper – ‘Free Press Journal’.
