For the first time in Champions Trophy – Hockey history, India has made it to the final and would now take on the formidable Australian team.
India’s appearance in the summit clash happened after hosts Great Britain held Belgium to 3-3 draw in a final round robin match.
This will be India’s first appearance in the final match in 36 years since the inception of the blue-riband six-nation tournament.
The draw between Great Britain and Belgium meant both of them finished behind India in the round-robin league, paving the way for India to play World champions Australia in the tonight’s title encounter.
With this qualification the Indian team also secured at least a Silver medal in the tournament which will now better their previous best.
India’s previous best performance in the tournament had come back in 1982, when they had won bronze medal at Amsterdam.
Though, India has secured their place in the finals, it must be noted that Australia has been formidable throughout the tournament, and have not lost a single game.
They finished top of the points table with 13 points in 5 matches with 4 wins and 1 draw, as compared to India who just won 2 of their 5 matches and made it to the finals with just 7 points on the board.
In the last Champions Trophy tournament of 2014 India had finished 4th after being defeated by the Australian team in the 3rd position match.
The final match is set to take place on Saturday June 18 (IST).
