Finally, India defeated New Zealand by 4-0 and ranks third in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament, the match was played on Saturday. Defender Rupinder Pal Singh (17th, 27th minutes) banged home two penalty corners in the second quarter before S.V. In the previous year’s edition, India finished as runners-up, that time they lost it to Australia, in the finals. After loosing it against Malaysia, India failed to qualify it for the final. Team’s coach Roelant Oltmans mentioned that he could not find it a matter of disappointment, however, the performance was a bit disheartening.
Azlan Shah is a tournament where most teams send a younger, experimental squad, in-order to test the bench strength. India suffered a 1-0 loss, as they played for Malaysia. However, in the final quarter, the performance was satisfactory. The team took no chances in the first three quarters of the game. While in the second quarter, the game was almost out of control for the players. They did not get any penalty corner as late as the 18th minute. They did not succeed in converting every other corner they occupied in the match later.
