The annual fee for undergraduate courses in the IITs will be hiked to Rs 2 lakh from Rs 90,000 from the upcoming academic session.
Sources said that the decision comes after IIT panel cleared the proposal for the fee hike last month.
A day before, HRD minister Smriti Irani promised to waive 100 percent fees for SC/ST, Dalit and disabled students at 23 branches of IITs.
She told, “Besides a complete fee waiver for these students, those with a family income of less than Rs 5 lakh will be given a 66% concession in the fees.”
Irani added that the move will help nearly 50 per cent of the 60,471 students enrolled in the country’s premier technology institutes.
At present, IITs have 15 per cent reservation for SCs, 7.5 percent for STs and 27 percent for OBCs.
However, Twitteraties have expressed anger towards the move.
I am all for fee waivers in IITs, but instead of basing this on s student’s caste, govt should give it to financially challenged kids
