A week after Rajasthan HC announced that the cow should be declared as the national animal, Hyderabad HC has declared cows to be a substitute to mothers and god.
While dismissing a plea of a cattle trader, Ramavath Hanuma, Justice Rao said that cows are a national wealth and a substitute to mothers and god. 63 cows and two buffaloes were seized from Hanuma at Kanchanapalli village. Hanuma revealed that he had brought the cows from grazing and moved the trial court to retrieve the cattle.
The prosecution alleged that Hanuma bought the cows from farmers for slaughtering and wanted to sell the beef in the markets during Bakr-Eid.
Justice Rao dismissed the petition and said,
Whether a person is entitled to claim interim custody of cows and bulls seized from him when he was allegedly taking them to a slaughter house? This question needs to be posed and answered in view of the national importance of cows which are substitutes to Mother and God.
The court also directed that veterinary doctors in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, who drive healthy cows to slaughter houses by awarding unfit certificates, must also be brought under AP Cow Slaughter Act, 1977. The act allows for the slaughter of bovines if they are unhealthy, old or unproductive.
