A birthday is the most special day of the year for everyone, and even more for children who innocently keep waiting for their day all through the year. But Graham’s 8th birthday wasn’t so special until officers of Hurst Police Department came to celebrate his special day.
Graham was very sad as none of his friends showed up for his birthday party. His parents had invited all of Graham’s friends, baked some delectable cakes and bought pizza for the guests. But no one came!
Dallas News reports that Graham had had the same heartbreaking experience on his 6th birthday. This time the boy told his mother that this always happens to him. Sad at his son’s heartbreak, Graham’s mother, Jennifer Day, says that it was his most broken voice she had ever heard. Day said,
It happened once before, but this time something snapped in me and it was like no, this is not happening to him again.
Day wanted to cheer her son up and so, she posted a message on the Nextdoor neighborhood website. She wrote,
I think I’m posting this out of utter emotional distress … but I need to ask if anyone wants to come to an 8 yr old boy’s birthday party to show him that he’s loved and valued as a person. NO gifts are required other than the gift of friendship.
But there was no response to the message. The couple then went to the Hurst Police Department as a last resort, to request if any officer could come to see their son, who also wanted to be a policeman.
Soon the entire shift at the police station, along with a few firefighters, showed up at Graham’s home, sang the birthday song and ate cake. Their street was lined with firetrucks and patrol cars.
Meanwhile, several families saw Jennifer’s message at the Nextdoor neighborhood website and came with their children to celebrate Graham’s birthday. They even brought some birthday presents along.
Delighted at this gesture by the policemen, firefighters and people in her neighborhood whom she had never met before, Day said,
There’s no way I can repay what they did for his little broken heart. By the end of it, I think he forgot that his friends didn’t come over for his birthday. Something like this, it literally guts you as a parent because you can’t fix it, at least in that moment. But the Hurst Police Department and the Hurst Fire Department, they went above and beyond and made his day.
