Makeup guru Huda Kattan, the founder of leading cosmetics brand Huda Beauty, is one of the greatest pioneers of the makeup industry. The 34-year-old American is followed avidly for her beauty advises which she shares with her million followers on social media – courtesy Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. The beauty mogul, with her makeup line of vibrant colours and several DIY tips on blogs, broke many barriers as few Muslim women to have become such a successful business entrepreneur.
Huda’s beauty tips are one of the most-followed among popular beauty bloggers and makeup enthusiasts, making her brand viral. The popular Instagrammer shares tips on eye shadow applications, how to improve skin textures, latest makeup trends, etc.
Huda’s vital tips have left the beauty industry confused ever since it posted in an April 2018 blog post about “Why Your Vagina Gets Dark And How To Lighten It.”
The post outlined how to ‘lighten your vagina‘ by natural ingredients to ‘lighten’ and ‘whiten’ that down part and goes onto a controversial note about skin colouration – how can dark people lighten their natural colour?
While Huda may not have written the blog herself, the subject involves “DIY lightening treatments” and mentions famous dermatologist Dr. Doris Day, who believes lemon juice “won’t do very much,” and coconut oil to brighten skin “would take years to see results.”
The post even suggested that followers should first reach their “ideal” goal weight before attempting to go on with this process, something which sounds more like body-shaming, isn’t it?
The ‘vagina lightening’ blog keeps referring to the word ‘vagina‘, whereas they seem to be referring to the ‘vulva‘ instead (Note: It’s critical to consult your doctor before using any ingredients ‘down there’).
This almost ‘racist‘ blog post received alot of backlash among Huda’s followers, after which her team issued an update. It said: “We’ve seen a lot of harmful DIYs on the internet, so we hope this post provides the best information on the topic and offers safe ways for people to do this, should they wish to.”
Fans all over the world left their responses on Twitter and Reddit. They criticised Huda for ‘fuelling women’s insecurities and other things. Here are some of the negative reactions from across the globe:
seriously pisses me off when people like huda beauty can be successful and have a huge platform to influence young girls and she writes articles about ‘how to lighten your vagina with lemon juice’ honest to god, women like that need a slap. no wonder young girls are insecure. pic.twitter.com/fHx3ZHJFmX
