Right from childhood, gobbling the Republic day parade on TV has been a tradition for me! I am pretty sure that I am not the only one to see this beautiful event every year. However, I always wondered how the Republic Day was celebrated in the yesteryears. More particularly, how the first Republic Day was celebrated? Yes, I am talking about 1950.

It was exactly on 10:18 am on 26 January 1950 when India became a Republic nation.

 

 



We are accustomed to seeing Rajpat beautifying to hold the Republic Day parade. However, there wasn’t any fixed venue for the celebration between 1950 and 1954.

The first Republic Day was held in 4 places one after another. They are Red Fort, National Stadium, Kingsway Camp, and Ramlila Ground.

 

 

Since the first time, India hosts head of state or government of another country. The first state guest of Honour for Republic Day was Indonesian President Sukarno.
