The hoax message was actually a voice note accompanied by a photograph of the woman who was standing next to a man. The message claimed that the duo was planning to elope.
The voice note that accompanied the photograph of the 20-year-old lady and her male friend claimed that the parents of the woman needed to be urgently informed, since the duo had all plans to run away.
This fake message from Kerala reached other countries in no time. And the man she was about to get married to, who lives abroad, also got the message somehow.
The lady had been engaged to the man for sometime. But to her utter shock her fiance decided to call off the wedding on the basis of the hoax message.
Affected from this incident, the lady decided to investigate about the one who spread this rumor. She filed a complaint in the police station. On April 7, Aluva East police arrested 35-year-old Shihab, a native of Chelakkulam in the district. According to local media reports, Shihab is member of the PDP, however the police did not confirm the same.
“Shihab found the lady (who was wearing a head scarf) and her male friend standing at a bus stop in Aluva last week and clicked their photograph. He then circulated the message with an audio clip that they were a couple and that they were about to elope with each other,” the police confirmed.
“This particular message also reached the lady’s fiance and his family, following which they called off the wedding. After this, the lady filed a complaint and with the help of the cyber cell, we traced Shihab,” the police said. Shihab has been booked under relevant sections of the IT Act.
