Sanjay Dutt’s biopic film ‘Sanju’ has stirred quite a storm at the box office. The film has already entered the 200-crore club within the first week of its release. In fact, it has become the fifth biggest opening film in Bollywood till date, after ‘Dangal’, ‘Sultan’, ‘Baahubali’ and ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’. Indeed, it is a record of sorts for the film’s stars and its makers.

The tremendous performance suggests that ‘Sanju’ may end up as one of the highest grossing films India has ever seen. There’s no other big film hitting the screen till next week either, which has given the film all the more a free run at the ticket window.

However, the tremendous performance at the box office has not stopped the critics of Sanju from pointing out the flaws in the movie.

While many pointed out the absence of key people in Sanjay’s life, including his first wife, Richa Sharma, and daughter Trishala Dutt, his close friend Salman Khan and alleged former girlfriend Madhuri Dixit, others took on the maker of the biopic on religious ground. One such is a critical Quora user who questioned director Rajkumar Hirani on religious line. He posted this question on Quora:

“Why were the Hindu goons shown as the one carrying out the Mumbai 1993 blasts in the movie Sanju when everyone knows who the real mastermind behind them was? Is this another attempt by Rajkumar Hirani to defame the Hindus after PK?”

Another Quora user, who claimed himself as Editor at The Cinemaniacs and who looked like a movie buff, has elaborately answered the posted question and it sounds like he really knows the things and is right as well.

He started his answer by giving some background about Bollywood and its connection with the underworld. He said that Bollywood right now is in a sticky position and that on one hand, the industry loves to make movies on real-life criminals, a formula that has proven wildly successful in Hollywood, which in most such movies involve Dawood Ibrahim in some way or the other. He also said that in the 90s, Bollywood was drenched in Mafia money.

So, is it true that Rajkumar Hirani tried to defame the Hindus by portraying Hindu goons carrying out the Mumbai blasts in the movie?

The Quora user said that the movie doesn’t mention Dawood Ibrahim at all and that even Sanjay Dutt’s long phone calls with Chota Shakeel (Dawood’s right-hand man) were not included. He said that the movie has nowhere pushed the blame on any Hindu don and that the man behind the Mumbai blasts was rightfully specified as Tiger Memon.

While he admitted that the death threats from Hindu extremists were real, which came after Sunil Dutt seemingly helped Muslims more during the Bombay Riots, he said that the Hindu don, played by Sayaji Shinde in the film, came into the picture long after the blasts and Sanjay Dutt’s initial release from the prison.

What do you say Rajkumar Hirani tried to show Hindus in any negative light in ‘Sanju’? Do you think Bollywood is destroying Hinduism?
