In a bizarre incident that has come to light, Kamalakanta Das, headmaster of a primary school in Balasore, Odisha, early today claimed that former Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee died on Friday morning and closed the school down for the day, so as to mourn him.
According to India Today, Das had gone to attend a teachers’ training programme in another school when he was given the incorrect information by a fellow teacher, following which the chain of events took place.
The students and teachers of Das’s school mourned Vajpayee’s death by holding a memorial meeting, after which the headmaster instructed the school to be closed in mourning.
While the whole scenario might seem like a comedy of errors, the locals of the area who came to know about this were not amused and complained to the District Collector seeking strict action against Das.
Following the agitation, Das was placed under suspension and might face criminal proceedings if required.
A similar incident had taken place few months back when Jharkhand’s education minister Neera Yadav had ‘paid her respects’ to former President APJ Abdul Kalam while he was alive and well.
