The Harvey Weinstein controversy in which film mogul Harvey Weinstein was accused of decades of sexual harassment and abuse, recently rocked Hollywood. The movie producer is the subject of a dozens of claims – some of the biggest names in Hollywood including including Ashley Judd, Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow. Among the accusations are that the filmmaker forced women to massage him and watch him naked. There were also accusations that actresses traded sexual favors to Harvey Weinstein in exchange for more work.
The Weinstein scandal also reminds us of Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion, which illustrated the grisly truth behind the glamorous world of celebrities. But even after allegations of sexual assault and harassment levelled at Weinstein prompted a wave of similar complaints, Bollywood has been reluctant to name and shame perpetrators. Though in the past, several Indian celebrities including Priyanka Chopra and Vidya Balan have talked about the existence of the casting couch in Bollywood, no one has come out in open to admit it . Now actor Shenaz Treasury of Delhi Belly (2011) fame, has admitted that there are many Harvey Weinsteins in the Indian entertainment industry.
According to Treasury, people like Harvey Weinstein, take undue advantage of others who are in the need of work. So, be it Bollywood or Hollywood, sexual harassment exists, she said.
In a career spanning over 15 years, Shenaz, who is also a writer, feels that in an industry where people take advantage of each other because of insecurity, pressure and support for #MeToo activism will make changes. She believes that such unmoral behaviour will no longer be tolerated in the industry.
She also believes that changes will not happen overnight in the industry and that the industry should give more power into the hands of females in the industry.
Shenaz, who was last seen in the recently-released film “Kaalakaandi”, had said she prefers quality over quantity even if it results in less films coming her way.
