Harnaam Kaur was previously in the news for her eccentric appearance and her unapologetic attitude to hold a beard in a world where beauty standards for women are pretty much skewed. And now, the same beard has won her a prestigious place in Guinness World Book Of Records.
The 24-year-old Catwalk model from Slough, Harnaam finds it ‘humbling’ to be in the 2017 edition which has gone on sale from September 8th. She sees it as an opportunity to spread the message of positivity and acceptance for who you are rather than how you look.
She has always been on the receiving end of criticism and curiosity for not being ‘normal’ or like other girls with no facial hair. Harnaam has confessed how she was constantly bullied in school and even contemplated suicide at one point. Harnaam suffers from a rare hormonal condition called ”Polycystic ovary syndrome” which caused excessive growth of hair on face, arms and chest.
However, she feels things changed for good once she made peace with herself and went ahead to be baptized. This meant she’d no longer be able to cut, wax or shave any hair from her body. Last year, she also became one of the faces to walk the ramp of London Fashion Week.
“I would never ever go back now and remove my facial hair because it’s the way God made me and I’m happy with the way I am. I feel more feminine, more sexy and I think I look it too. I’ve learned to love myself for who I am, nothing can shake me now.”
Did you read that? Feminity’s got nothing to do with how we appear to be. A certain standard of beauty cannot be plastered on everyone’s faces. The magazines and Photoshop can alter the perceptions and the edges, but how will they be ever able to distort the fighting spirits?
Way to go, Harnaam!
