Even as hundreds of Delhi University students took a mega-march out against alleged violence by ABVP, the LSR student who had made the campaign viral via her Facebook post was forced to withdraw.

Gurmehar Kaur, a martyrs’ daughter, over the past few days had found herself at the eye of a storm where she was not only ridiculed for taking a stand against ABVP’s alleged Ramjas college violence, but also openly threatened with rape on social media.

An self-proclaimed advocate of peace, Kaur found her campaign taking a political turn where many known names spoke against her while the opposition expressed support.

Having enough of the public shaming and threats, Kaur on February 28 changed her DP back to a regular one and opted out of DU’s mega rally seeking privacy.

Kaur soon left for her hometown, Jalandhar, even as her supporters and other DU student made sure that her efforts didn’t go down in vain.

Thousands of students not only gathered for the mega rally and made sure that her fight against ABVP violence continued, but vivaciously spoke against the people who threatened to rape her, and forced the Police to register a FIR against them.

The police invoked sections on sexual harassment and criminal intimidation law to book these people.

Their move has even got political support as Delhi Commission for Women issued a notice to Facebook, asking it to deactivate accounts of those who had issued rape threats to Kaur and even ABVP filed a police complaint against unknown persons for threatening Kaur.
