The world is eagerly waiting for the seventh season of the epic drama, ‘Game of Thrones’. The series is filled with thrill, drama, romance and suspense. With several awards in its kitty, GoT also has an amazing array of costumes, sets and swords. If you think that Jon Snow’s “Long Claw” or Arya Stark’s “Needle” are made in the US, then you are mistaken. The GoT series has more of a desi connection than you would have thought.
The swords are actually manufactured in Dehradun by Windlass Steelcrafts. Established in 1943, the company originally manufactured khukris for the Indian Army’s Gorkha regiment. These khukris were used by soldiers during WWII. The factory had a humble beginning with only 50 workers and now has extended to have a branch at Noida as well.
The Noida branch of Windlass is called RS Windlass & Sons and was created in 1991. It is a textile mill which has supplied various clothing items to famous Hollywood productions. Harry Potter’s Gryffindor school uniform, the robe Obi-Wan Kenobi wore in ‘Star Wars’ and Themistocles’ cape from ‘300’ were all manufactured in this mill. The company has also provided equipment and clothing to other movies like ‘Skyfall’, ‘The Mummy’ and ‘Gladiator’, among others.
The company is privately owned and was established by Ved Prakash Windlass. Now, it has ventured into several services like military supplies, custom manufacturing, clothing manufacturing, swords refurbishment, design and manufacture of weapons. The swords used in GoT are made in India and in Spain and have been designed after extensive research in historical accuracy.
