Delhi transport minister Gopal Rai, who’s facing allegations of corruption, has quit from his post.
The AAP government has cited health reasons for his decision. Satyendra Jain is likely to take charge as Transport Minister for now.
Rai, who is also the minister for employment, development, labour, general administration and irrigation and flood control departments, recently underwent a surgery. He has been undergoing physiotherapy at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre and is housed in the hospital.
The development comes immediately after Rai had said that he will personally go to the Anti-Corruption Bureau to discuss about the allegations of corruption in the App based Premium Bus Service.
He had also said that he is ready to face jail if found guilty of corruption.
The city government’s app-based premium bus service scheme couldn’t take off following allegations that a particular aggregator was favored.
The scheme could not be launched because Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung did not give his assent to the service and asked the transport minister to review it.
The city government led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is in a tiff with Lt. Governor Jung, accusing him of creating hurdles in its development plans.
The resignation also comes at a time when 21 AAP MLAs face disqualification for holding “office of profit”.
