Gopal Bhargava, Minister for Social Justice, panchayat and rural development for the state of Madhya Pradesh has gifted wooden bats to 700 brides at a mass wedding.
This unconventional gift came from Bhartiya Janta Party’s cabinet minister of state with a special purpose. According to Bhargava, the Mogris (wooden bats traditionally used to wash clothes) should be used by the girls to beat their husbands up in case they return home drunk.
The minister has also got a special message engraved on the bats- “Sharabiyon ke sutara hetu bhent, police nah bolegi”. This means that the bat is being gifted to beat drunkards and police will not interfere in the matter. While presenting the bats to brides at the mass wedding, the minister said,
The government or police alone would not be able to solve this problem. For this, people have to come forward. There are many examples in history which show that when masses intervene, things have changed for the better.
Gopal Bhargava also urged the brides to ensure proper education of children in the family, stop illegal activities in their villages and plant saplings.
The mass wedding was organized this Saturday in Garhakota of Sagar district on the occasion of Akshay Tritiya. Bhargava has given this unusual gift to the brides to tackle the menace of domestic violence in the area, that is also his hometown. There are a large number of complaints of women of this district being physically and mentally abused by their drunk husbands. The minister told the brides that they should reason with their husband first and “let the wooden paddles do the talking” if they refuse to listen. Commenting on the same, the minister says,
Whenever I visit any rural or urban area in my constituency, women complain about their husband’s drinking habit. They inform me that whatever little they earn is snatched away by their husband for alcohol. They (women) are also subjected to physical violence.
Bhargava feels that the bats are the solution to bringing the requisite social change if the menace of alcoholism is to be dealt with. The minister has ordered 10,000 such bats to be gifted to women suffering violence from alcoholic husbands.
While this could be a morale booster for the newly wedded girls to not feel scared of their drunk husbands or succumb to domestic violence of any sort, is this also not an encouragement to resort to illegal ways to prevent something illegal? Given the present state of society and the rising abuse of women, this seems to be the appropriate, and only, solution for the stubborn people who never accept logic.
However, raising men to be more sensitive and accepting towards females is a much better way to bring about the revolution society needs at the moment.
