Two giant robots, Megabot and Kuratas, have been fighting with each other for the last two years.
Engineers Gui Cavalcanti and Matt Oehrlein from USA always dreamt of making giant robots and making them fight. Hence, they made a giant robot called MK II. The robot drives on tank chains and can fire a 3-pound projectile. Their machine fought against a similar giant made by Japanese engineers.
To fight the Japanese machine, the Americans upgraded their robot to fit in a chainsaw and other weapons.
The MKII then took on the only other giant robot in the world – the Japanese Kuratas. It was the only pilot-driven giant robot in the world before MK II came. Kuratas is a 4.5-metric-ton machine built by Suidobashi Heavy Industry in Japan.
For the last two years, both the engineers have been working on upgrading their robots. Their final battle was recorded just a few days ago. The teams wanted to live stream the fight but that couldn’t work out because of several technical reasons. Hence, the teams battled it out over a course of few days at an undisclosed location in Japan.
The Americans used a robot (they named it Eagle Prime) in the battle. Prime came with a modular weapons system, a 40-horse power chainsaw, a 2-foot-diameter drill auger, two multipurpose grapple arms, and a two-barrel cannon. The robot was driven by two humans – one in the back who controlled the motions and the gunner who sat in the front.
Kuratas, on the other hand, is a lighter, more agile robot. It is 13-feet tall and weighs 9,000 pounds. Kuratas rolled around on a set of 4 wheels and wide extending legs that raised the robot up to get around quickly. It was piloted by just one human. The robot has a drone which can fly up to 500 metres.
What happened next is pure joy. The machines engaged each other. They fought like two Transformers. Though it was over in a matter of minutes, the battle proved that the age of giant machines which will participate in real wars is here.
That’s both interesting and scary!
