Forget B-Town Celebs, Here’s Why Geeta Phogat Should Be Your Role Model

Updated on 2 August, 2019 at 2:12 pm By

In this age of Instagram following and Facebook likes, it’s very easy for young adults to get influenced by what they see in the digital media. The photos and videos put up by B-Town celebs and models, especially women, are more often than not, the results of filters and are quite frankly, fake and untrue. Hence, to be inspired by such, would be foolhardy. If you need some motivation and inspiration, look up to the likes of athletes like Geeta Phogat. Yes, we all know her as the Dangal girl, and the daughter of Mahavir Singh Phogat. Some others may also know that she won India’s first ever gold medal in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 or that she was awarded the Arjuna Award for Wrestling. But, what else do we know about her beyond that?

Here, we give you more reasons, than her being a World class Olympic athlete, which make her worthy of being a role-model for all young girls (and boys too!) rather than those Instagram influencers.

First female wrestler from India to qualify for the Olympics

In 2012, Geeta Phogat, became the first female wrestler from India to qualify for the Olympics. She was able to achieve this after winning the gold medal at the qualifying tournament at Astana in Kazaksthan.

Didn’t win but inspired many

At the 2012 Olympics, though Geeta earned a repechage, she lost the first fight and exited the tournament. However, just the fact that she managed to compete at the highest level inspired a lot of girls to take up wrestling as a sport in the country.

A losing start, but a winning end

In the World Wrestling Championship of 2012 which was held in Canada, Geeta lost the second round to Saori Yoshida of Japan. However, she wasn’t ready to give up so easily and bounced back by winning both the bouts in her repechage round to return home with a bronze medal around her neck.

Uniformed woman

In October, another feather in the cap got added to Geeta’s lists of achievements. And, this one wasn’t related to wrestling either. She was appointed as the DSP of Haryana Police.

The list of achievements is quite lengthy and noteworthy

Geeta has had a flourishing atheletic career from 2010 to 2015. She hasn’t been active since 2017 in the wrestling front, but her list of awards and achievements only point that she will be back, with a bang, soon!

Don’t you think the life and achievements of such women, like Geeta Phogat, are more inspiring than some B-Town celeb? Better to read about Geeta’s achievements and watch her match then pore over what a celeb wore at the airport, right?
