Gautam Gambhir, who is well known for his stand on topics of national importance, has hit out at those who are against standing for the national anthem. Gambhir has multiple times come out in aid of the families affected by the violence and terrorism in Jammu & Kashmir. In early September, he announced he would fund Jammu and Kashmir Police officer Abdul Rashid’s daughter Zohra’s education for a lifetime after he was killed in Anantnag on August 28.

Sharing his thoughts on the widely-contested issue of standing up for the national anthem in cinema halls, he tweeted:

Known to be straight-forward about social issues and pointing out the wrong, he is also known for his love for the Indian Army.

Gambhir’s comments follows a tweet by Veteran film star Kamal Haasan in which he said that patriotism should not be tested at random places and suggested playing of national anthem on Doordarshan at midnight everyday.

The Supreme Court on October 23 had said people do not need to stand up in cinema halls to prove their patriotism and asked the Centre to consider amending the rules for regulating playing of the national anthem in the theatres. The SC had also observed that it cannot be assumed that if a person does not stand up for national anthem, then he is “less patriotic”.

The debte has also sparked responses from leading film fraternity members:

Surprisingly, Gambhir’s response sparked some opposition from the opponents.
