Updated on 12 March, 2019 at 12:17 pm By

Indian women are the queens of the kitchens in their homes. But when it comes to being a professional chef, it has mostly been a male-dominant industry for years. Things, however, are changing and women are getting due recognition for their potential and talent. One such exemplary woman is Garima Arora. She is an Indian chef who has done the nation proud. Yes, Arora has become the first Indian female chef to get a Micheline star.

The Mumbai-based chef has set up the award-winning restaurant ‘Gaa’ in Bankok, Thailand. She began this journey when she was 21-yrs-old and decided to make a move to Paris. 9 years after the journey, she has become a Michelin star chef.

It was Garima’s father who acted as the initial inspiration behind her wanting to become a chef. She grew up watching him cook and the experience made her develop a palate and knack for cooking. Here is from the chef herself:

“He used to make risotto and hummus – imagine in the 90s in India when no one knew what these things were!”

Just like all things good, this feat did not come easily to Arora. She first went on to study at the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. Then went on to work at various restaurants across the world. She worked with likes of Gordon Ramsay, Gaggan Anand, and Rene Redzepi.

And it was in 2017 that Arora opened ‘Gaa’. A year after that, in November 2018 that she got the coveted star. Check out the pictures of Garima Arora receiving the star:

The Michelin star signifies excellence and creativity in the food industry. If the star wasn’t enough of a feather in her cap, Garima has won the award of Asia’s Best Female Chef 2019. Garima believes that Indian cuisine can be the face of modern cooking. Hence, she proudly took on the responsibility to make that happen.
