Rejoice all. ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, one of Indian cinema’s greatest films, will be aired on Netflix as an eight-part series.
Kashyap himself said that this is the first of its kind attempt at presenting the film as a series on Netflix.
Directed by Anurag Kashyap, the iconic film will be presented for English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Chinese audiences with their respective subtitles from the first week of December.
The critically acclaimed epic, with run time of over five hours, was premiered in the Director’s Fortnight section of the Cannes festival in 2012.
In India, the film was released in two parts the same year with both immediately receiving critical and commercial acclaim.
Though the film took home every award it was not India’s official entry at the 2013 Academy Awards.
The deal with Netflix was finalised by Cinelicious, which has North American rights to the film, Film Karavan, Kashyap’s Phantom Films and producer Guneet Monga.
According to Film Karavan co-founder Pooja Kohli Taneja, one advantage of releasing the film in series format on the web is that it can bypass the “obnoxious censorship”.
