According to reports, India will host the third meeting of the G20 Framework Working Group (FWG) on the ghats of Varanasi and not in Delhi.

The meeting, which is set to discuss challenges before the global economy and their possible solutions, will have over 100 high-level officials from G20 member and invitee countries and will also have members of international organizations such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The temple city of Varanasi is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency and at one point was considered among the dirtiest cities in the country.

With this meeting, India is not only hoping to show the success of the Swachh Bharat mission in a city but to also help India place Varanasi on the international diplomacy map.

This will be the first time such a meeting would take place outside Delhi and international delegates will get to watch the Ganga aarti of the holy city during their tour.

The meeting is scheduled to take place on March 28-29 and will have Union secretary of economic affairs Shaktikanta Das inaugurating the meeting and as the chief guest.

In the past two and a half years Varanasi’s ghats have undergone a swift transformation with PM Modi taking a personal interest in the implementation of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

India had last hosted another such meeting (BRICS) of officials in Goa, which is one of the country’s top tourist destinations.
