Remember the grey-eyed charming actress from the film ‘Papa Kehte Hain’? The film was a great hit of its time. Songs from the film, such as ‘Ghar se nikalte hi’, ‘Yeh jo thode se hain paise’ and others had also made a mark in Bollywood. But, despite the film being a huge success, it’s actress could not make a great acting career in film industry.
After ‘Papa Kehte Hain’ released in 1995, she did a few other films out of which ‘Hogi Pyar Ki Jeet’ was another successful project. But many of the other films she did either did not release or could not do well at the box office. Eventually, she was last seen on big screen in year 2000 in Telugu film ‘Vamsi’.
The actress is none other than Mayuri Kango. She made her debut into the film industry with film ‘Naseem’ for which director Saeed Akhtar Mirza bagged a National Award. Soon her talent was recognized by Mahesh Bhatt who offered her ‘Papa Kehte Hain’. At that time, she was waiting for her board exam results and hoped of returning to college once the film was over. It was supposed to be a telefilm but later it turned into a feature film.
The film made both Mayuri and her co-star Jugal Hansraj, the well-known faces of Bollywood. After the film, leading a normal college life became difficult for her. So she opted to complete her bachelor’s and master’s staying at home. She also took up jobs like writing scripts and making documentaries.
Later, in 2000, she entered television industry, but did not stay there for long. She got married in December 2003 and shifted to US. There she pursued MBA in marketing and finance from City University of New York and started working in the corporate industry. In 2011, she was blessed with a son and thereafter returned to India.
Presently, she is working as the Managing Director for Performics, a leading digital media agency and is residing in Sector-56 Gurugram. Talking about her return to India, Mayuri tells the Times of India,
I moved to Gurgaon because my in-laws are based here and my son could be with them. Managing a successful career and a child can be taxing. You need a good support system, which was missing in the US. Also, around the same time, a lot of exciting stuff was happening in digital advertising, the sector I work for, in India. The company I work for has offices in Mumbai, Bangalore and Gurgaon, and I keep shuttling between the three cities.
Upon being asked if she wants to return to the film industry, she says,
I never wanted a celeb-like life and that’s why I never miss that part. The movie was incredible, but what happened next in my life was equally amazing. Today, I adore my job. I can only be part of films if it requires me to act only on weekends.
Surprised with the fact that people recognize her despite the fact that she did only a couple of commercially successful films, Mayuri says,
Every time a new client sees me, they have the same question ‘ ‘How come you are here?’ I have the answered it so many times that some colleagues suggested that I record the answer. But I have to prove myself in every new meeting as people have a notion that actors are not intelligent. I have worked hard to make people take me seriously. People should complete their education before they come looking for that big break in Bollywood. Especially the actresses. Their career in the industry lasts only around ten years. Have a backup option.
