Most of us must have seen men delivering food to our doorsteps. But when a woman comes delivering food, it is nothing but surprising. In one such case, Chennai’s Jayalakshmi became the first Swiggy delivery woman. Earlier, she was rejected on the ground that ‘they don’t hire women delivery personnel’s’ but she eventually succeeded in getting the job. Swiggy is well on its way in erasing the line between male and female food delivery personnel by engaging more women as delivery personnel.
Now Jayalakshmi rides her two-wheeler all across Alwarpet (the region she was assigned) and delivers food at doorsteps.
And nothing could come in front of her ambitions as at first she was unable to use the Google Maps but with little practice, she can now easily handle it.
Jayalaxmi is mother of two children and works from noon till 5:30 PM.
At first, she was worried about her safety but a little training had put all her worries to rest. Now she is a confident woman who knows well how to handle emergency or security/threat situations.
According to Jayalaxmi, she received mixed reactions from people. Many think her to be a customer care executive, but get surprised to know that she was a delivery woman. Check out this tweet that shows more such women taking up such jobs.
“Customers get awed when they see women delivery personnel. They say they never thought girls also deliver. They appreciate us a lot!” says Komal, a spirited delivery woman. #WomensDay | @singhvatsala @Abhi5hekRanjan

As per media reports, Swiggy has planned to employ 2,000 women as delivery personnel by March 2019. Given the security concerns and preference by some, the company allows women to complete deliveries by 6 pm and will also have a dedicated helpline to address concerns.
