International Olympic Committee (IOC) on August 3, approved five new sports that would be part of the Olympic Games in Tokyo (2020).
The decision was taken during the 129th IOC Session that took place in Rio.
This session was the most comprehensive evolution of the Olympic programme in modern history where the committee decided to add five new sports in Tokyo Olympics 2020 programme.
These five sports are – baseball/softball, karate, skateboard, sports climbing and surfing.
The plans call for staging the skateboarding and climbing events at temporary venues that would be installed in urban settings.
The decision marks a historic step as it now aims to bring the Games to young people and reflect the trend of urbanised sport.
August 4 decision was an outcome of a cumulative vote process that began two years ago in 2014.
With this, the Organising Committees have the flexibility to propose new sports for their edition of the Games so as to put more focus on innovation, flexibility and youth in the Development Olympic Programme.
