The love for freebies is universal, and Indians are no different. In a new report by Irdeto, a software security and media technology company, India is ranked as one of the top 5 countries in the world when it comes to peer-to-peer (P2P) downloads, despite having one of the slowest internet speeds in the world. It is estimated that due to piracy, the Indian media and entertainment sector loses about $ 2.8 billion, each year. While the producers invest money to create a film, a dent in that profit is created by websites like Filmywap.com.
This is a public torrent website that mainly leaks English, Hindi, and Punjabi movies before their release. Needless to say, this is an illegal site that you should avoid using.
The big leaks
Lately, the Indian film industry tried to fight the menace of piracy but still somehow managed to lose. Tamilrockers emerged during this whole controversy as one of the main villains which leaked Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan starrer Thugs of Hindostan and Akshay Kumar and Rajinikanth starrer 2.0– two much anticipated high budget movies despite ISPs blocking more than 12,000 websites to prevent piracy.
But Tamilrockers is not the only player in the game of piracy in India. There are more and filmywap.com is another website where pirated movies are easily available.
Filmywap: A public torrent site?
Created in the year 2011, filmywap.com can be categorized as a public torrent website, though it can also be seen as an index page of pirated movies and TV series as it redirects the visitors mostly to different third-party hosts. According to the meta-description of the website, it severs the primary objective of providing the latest Bollywood and Hollywood movies and TV series for free download. However, it also provides pirated versions of Pollywood, Tollywood etc. Also, it indexes movies from about 20 different countries across the world that are mostly dubbed in Hindi to serve the Indian audience. Presently, it has 2.0, Thugs of Hindostan, and Kedarnath listed for download among others. It needs to be mentioned that not all the links indexed by the website actually works.
Besides the filmywap.com top-level domain, filmywap also owns the domains filmywap.in, filmywap.co.com, filmywap.movie. Here, while the .in, .co, .movie, and .com redirects to a similar looking UI, the domain filmywap.icu lands the visitors to a different kind of UI that comes with the clear disclaimer that it only indexes the pirated versions of the movies listed but hosts no movies on its server.
Filmywap.icu can be yet another website run by the same person(s) behind operations of other filmywap domains or it can be an imitator and owned by a different person altogether.
The immense popularity of filmywap
More than 1.5 million people visited the website in the month of November 2018 alone according to similarweb.com and only one-fourth of the traffic came from countries other than India. Almost all of its visitors come from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh and more than 90% of the social traffic comes from YouTube. Needless to say, the popularity of the site has led to a few imitating handles on social networking sites.
It remains to be seen how in the days to come the film industries deal with the problem of piracy as, despite existing laws, it hasn’t diminished much. It will also be interesting to see if sites like filmywap.com will be held responsible for copyright infringement as there are clear laws that helping others to infringe is also punishable and listing pirated versions of movies under copyright can be counted as assisting to infringe.
