Bollywood’s relationship with underworld is like an affair that one can neither accept nor deny. Though mostly kept hidden, there are times few characters from this affair that are portrayed in films. Here are some of the popular Hindi movies based on the real-life gangster.
1. Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai
Based on the life of Haji Mastan, this movie captures the journey of Mumbai underworld towards becoming an organized sector. Though the narration is extremely dramatic, the dialogues resemble real-life incidents in many instances.
This film is directed by Ram Gopal Varma. It was an attempt to loosely capture the relationship between Dawood Ibrahim and Chota Rajan, two of the most feared mobsters of Mumbai. They were very close before falling out over the 1993 bomb blasts in Mumbai. Impressive acting by Ajay Devgn and Vivek Oberoi with a realistic cinematography gives the viewers a glimpse of the underworld in Mumbai.
3. D Day
In this Nikhil Advani film, Rishi Kapoor is seen in the role of Iqbal Seth aka Goldman, a Pakistani gangster. The film gives a surficial glimpse of mobster’s life and media frenzy surrounding the same.
4. Shootout at Lokhandwala
Based on the infamous 1991 Lokhandwala Complex shootout, this movie realistically depicts the gunfight between Mumbai Police and the gangsters. To catch notorious gangster Maya Dolas and his gang, ATS officer Aftab Ahmed Khan along with 400 armed policemen attacked the Lokhandwala Complex where the criminals were hiding.
In this movie, Arjun Rampal plays the role of one of the most feared gangsters of Mumbai, Arun Gawli. He later became a politician which is captured in the film too.
6. Gangs of Wasseypur
This two-part movie is the most realistic portrayal of real-life gang lords. Based on the coal mafia of Dhanbad in Jharkhand, this movie captures the entangled relationship between power, politics, and money. Directed by Anurag Kashyap, it draws most of the storyline from incidents of real life.
