In one of the most historic moments ever, the Indian cricket team shocked the mighty West Indies and lifted the world cup on June 25, 1983. This revolution in the cricket world became even more special because no one anticipated that India could win against the unbeatable West Indies. But the Kapil’s Devils did the unexpected and made the country proud.
While most of us were not there to witness this legendary moment of India’s 1983 world cup win, one of Bollywood’s filmmakers, Kabir Khan has a big surprise for both the cricket and Bollywood fans. In a huge turn of events, Kabir Khan has announced his next film with none-other-than one of Bollywood’s most versatile actors, Ranveer Singh.
The real-life winning team!
The film titled to be ’83 is based on India’s historic 1983 World Cup victory. Amazing isn’t it?! Interestingly, Ranveer Singh has been signed in the film as the veteran cricketer and India’s former captain Kapil Dev who helmed the torch in the 1983 World Cup and brought groundbreaking victory home.

On playing the role of the notable cricketer who is a national pride, the 33-year-old Padmaavat actor said:
“For me to be playing Kapil Dev is a huge deal. He is a legend in the truest sense. He commands such respect in the cricket fraternity and has a vast fan following. The story of underdogs’ triumph is completely lost. There is a whole generation that needs to know and I am happy to be fronting it.”
The team of ’83 shared some memorable instances from the preparations of the film based on Kapil Dev’s victory in 1983 World Cup. Have a look:

I feel honoured and privileged to be part of this film. One of the greatest underdog stories of all time – finally coming to the silver screen. What a day it's been. To have met our sporting heroes in the flesh and be regaled by their stories – full of nostalgia, humour, emotion…a truly unforgettable event. Im filled with a sense of responsibility and committed to making a film that the entire nation can be proud of. The greatest Indian sports story will now get its deserved cinematic glory! It's time to #Relive83 🏏may God bless our endeavour. Thank you for this once in a lifetime opportunity @kabirkhankk … lets do this !!!
Just like most of us, Ranveer Singh also claimed that he has no idea how the Indian cricket team won the 1983 World Cup and would like the country to know about the unforgettable moment. He said:
“I had no idea this how we won our first World Cup. They were a complete bunch of underdogs that nobody believed in and they fought and had the ultimate victory. It is a human story.”
Vikramaditya Motwane of Phantom Films shared:
“1983 is the greatest Indian underdog sports story ever and we’re delighted to be making it with Kabir and Ranveer. Taking on the mantle of playing a legend like Kapil Dev isn’t easy but if any actor can do it, it’s Ranveer. I’m sure his portrayal is going to be endearing and brilliant and we can’t wait to see it on screen.”
Since the 1983 World Cup has been a milestone victory in the history of Indian cricket, the film ’83 is planned to be shot at real locations. While Director Kabir Khan has already completed the script of the film, casting of the other players other than Ranveer Singh as Kapil Paaji is yet in process.
