The controversy over the chanting of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ refuses to die down. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi challenged that he won’t utter the slogan even if a knife is put to his throat. Right-wing groups are demanding that everyone says it to prove that they are Indians.

The debate appears to have taken an unwarranted turn with a Hyderabad-based Islamic seminary Jamia Nizamia issuing a fatwa practically making it impossible for any Muslim to chant ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ even if they want to do so.

This is what Mufti Azeemuddin, head of the fatwa centre of the seminary, wrote:

The Mufti did not forget to add that “the Muslims of Bharat love the country”.
