Over the years, the increase in crime rates have given us some of the most notorious and famous serial killers. We all love watching crime shows like Breaking Bad and Criminal Minds. But let’s not forget that these are fictional and if we knew or came across someone like that in real, we’d pretty much lose our shit. And, we’re not talking about famous serial killers far away either, because our home-ground too isn’t any better off. So, if you think gruesome crimes and killers are only born in US and other countries and that our country is pretty safe, think again!
India too has produced quite a few famous serial killers and their acts of crime would put the fictional killers and their tales to shame. Want to know who these famous serial killers were?

1. Gowri Shankar
Given the nickname Auto Shankar, he began off his crimes by being a transporter of illegal arrack (coconut liquor). Later, within a period of six months during 1988, he was charged with the abduction and murder of 9 teenage girls from. He initially blamed all of it on the influence of cinema but later confessed to committing the murders on the orders given by politicians who had raped the abducted teenage girls. He even escaped from Chennai Central Prison after his arrest but was rearrested and hanged to death in Salem Prison in 1995.
2. Raman Raghav
In case you didn’t know already, the movie starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui was inspired by one of these real life famous serial killers. He too was given a nickname, Psycho Raman. His gruesome killing acts involved bludgeoning his victims to death. When he was finally caught, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Though he is believed to have killed 23 people, experts can only assume this is correct because his mental stability and his confessions were both highly questionable at the time of his arrest.
3. Mohan Kumar
Nicknamed Cyanide Mohan, he used to seduce unmarried girls into having sex with him and ask them to take contraceptives. These contraceptives however were actually cyanide pills. He killed off 20 women in this manner between 2005-2009. Before joining the list of famous serial killers through such hideous crimes, he was a Physical Education teacher at a primary school. His crimes ranged afar though because he was also said to be involved in bank frauds and other financial forgeries. He was sentenced to death in December 2013.
4. Charles Sobhraj
He is probably the most famous among these famous serial killers. He too inspired a Bollywood flick titled Mein aur Charles. Around 12 people became the murder victims of Charles from 1975 to 1976. His motive behind these murders was to fund his flamboyant lifestyle. He first gained the trust of his victims by getting them out of trouble situations (which he himself had planned) and then defrauded them. He earned the nickname ‘Bikini killer’ because the dead bodies of two of his female victims were found in floral bikinis. He served only a brief sentence in India from 1976 to 1997. He was rearrested in Nepal in 2004 and is now serving a second life sentence.
Mallika used to pretend consoling women belonging to the lower middle class and who were facing domestic issues. After sympathizing with them and gaining their trust, she killed them by poisoning them with cyanide and then robbed them of their belongings. This earned her the nickname Cyanide Mallika. She was arrested in 2007 and awarded a death sentence in 2012. This was then reduced to a life sentence.
6. Renuka Shinde & Seema Gavit
Anjanabai trained her two daughters Renuka Shinde and Seema Gavit in petty thievery. The sisters kidnapped little children and used them as decoys or defence against accusations in their thefts. The children who created problems, were cold bloodily murdered. Over six toddlers were reported to be killed by these two sisters between 1990 to 1996. However, in their confessions they said that they didn’t remember how many kids they had killed in total before the 90s.
7. Surinder Koli and Moninder Singh Pandher
This one had all possible horrific elements involved including rape, cannibalism, pedophilia and even organ trafficking. Surinder Koli was the domestic help of Moninder Singh Pandher. In 2006, both the men were arrested in connection to the discovery of skulls of missing children in Nithari village in the outskirts of Noida. A lot of twisted turns followed their arrest and there was a huge media furor over what was actually going on. While some of the crimes held substance others were believed to be rumours. After investigation, Surinder Koli was found guilty of 5 homicides and sentenced to death. Pandher however still awaits his fate as there are 11 other unsolved murders under the same investigation.
