In a scam which is bound to send ripples in the Pakistan Sports Ministry, the country’s national exchequer was recently asked to reimburse the expenses for a ‘Belgium Cricket team’ visiting Lahore.
The expense would have not been anything out of the ordinary were it not for the fact that the team itself was fake and comprised members who visited on government’s money.
According to media reports, the visit was arranged for few people affiliated with PML-N UK, who set up this so called cricket team from abroad and then used it to reach Lahore.
They then used their links in the Punjab education ministry and with the Punjab sports minister Rana Mashud sent all their tour expenses to the Pakistan government.
Only two members of the 15-member squad were British. The remaining were from Pakistan itself. But the team went on to participate in Punjab youth festival.
The expenses incurred by the organisers for this team included travelling cost from London to Lahore and their lodging and boarding expenses.
Even the PCB was unaware of the existence of such a team.
The person who accompanied this team is a close associate of Rana Mashud and was appointed as coordinator without any legal or constitutional formalities.
