Pakistan recently hosted the Independence Cup in which World XI players played against the Pakistan cricket team. The series comprised of three T-20 matches played on September 12, 13 and 15 at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. It carried huge significance for Pakistan from the point of view of international cricket since the country has not played high-profile international cricket at home ever since the Sri Lankan team’s bus was attacked on March 3, 2009. But since Pakistan promised to make top-notch security arrangements for World XI players, 14 players from 7 Test-playing countries agreed to participate in the series.
Some of the players that comprised the World XI team were Hashim Amla, David Miller, Darren Sammy, Morne Morkel, Imran Tahir, Thisara Perera and team captain Faf du Plessis. The team lost against Pakistan but the series was important for another reason that it marked the return of international cricket in Pakistan.

World XI team captain, Faf du Plessis, appreciated Pakistan’s effort in organizing the series and thanked the country for offering a great experience. He also thanked Pakistan for their hospitality and took to Twitter for the same.
Here is what he tweeted:
Arrived safely back home .Thank you Pakistan and Lahore for your hospitality ✌🏻 pic.twitter.com/EI11mU34o9
— Faf Du Plessis (@faf1307) September 17, 2017
Though he made sure to thank “Pakistan and Lahore” for the hospitality but perhaps the choice of words in the first part of the tweet wasn’t liked by many people. With his tweet, Faf du Plessis offended some Pakistanis and gave some non-Pakistanis a reason to troll him and Pakistan. His saying “arrived safely back home” was taken as an indication towards the terrorist activities that Pakistan allegedly indulges in and the security threat people face while visiting there. Irrespective of what he wanted to mean, he was trolled hard by twitterati.
Have a look at some of the responses to Faf du Plessis’s tweet:
