There is not a single Indian who has not heard about this dreaded gangster, Abu Salem. His actions have always captured not only the Indian media but also the entire Indian population for about 25 years now.
Here are some interesting facts about this wanted gangster.
Abu Salem was born in Azamgarh district in Uttar Pradesh in 1969 in a lower middle class family. He was second among four brothers, though some reports suggest that he was the eldest of four brothers. Salem’s father was a lawyer. After dabbling in a number of careers ranging from being a taxi driver, delivery boy to garment salesman and real estate agent, Salem found his calling in the world of crime.
2. The beginning of Abu Salem
After some years of struggle, he became a real estate broker. It was around this time that the notoriousness of Abu Salem was finally revealed. Abu Salem’s brush with the police came to limelight in 1988 when he assaulted a colleague over monetary issue.
3. Turning point of Abu Salem
1989 was a turning point for Abu Salem. It was in that year that Abu Salem came into contact with Dawood who appointed him as a delivery man for arms and ammunition; his proficiency at delivering goods at the right time and place earned him the nickname, Abu Samaan. In 1990, Abu Salem was recruited to oversee gangs for the Mumbai operations known as D company.
4. Involvement in 1993 blast
Like Dawood, Salim was also actively involved in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts that killed over 250 people and injured 700 more.
5. Bollywood link
Allegedly he had supplied weapons to Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt. He is known to have extorted money from actors, invested in film production, and also usurped overseas rights of Bollywood films. His men killed actress Manisha Koirala’s personal assistance and also (allegedly) murdered Gulshan Kumar (founder of the T-Series music label). Among his other targets, names like Aamir Khan, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Rakesh Roshan have been heard.
6. Affair with Monica Bedi
And then there was Abu Salem’s infamous love affair with Bollywood actress, Monica Bedi. Monica Bedi met Abu Salem by the end of 1988 at a show in Dubai. He introduced himself as a businessman but with a different name. They were later caught together while entering Portugal in 2005.
7. Personal life
He also married a girl called Samira Jumani from Jogeshwari, who is now settled in the US. Abu Salem has two sons from their marriage.
He was quite psychotic in his personal front. According to his first wife, Abu Salem was a violent psychotic man. He was never a family person and she also said she never led the life of a married woman.
