As per latest reports, Facebook Inc’s version of television will be online sometime in August. The company is in discussion with the partners to put the first few episodes of the spotlight shows on air. It is reported that many short-form and inexpensive programs have been finished and the funding process for highly professional TV style like shows is on. Such shows will be aired later on the site.
It was expected that the project would be ready a month ago. However, it has taken slightly longer and more delays can be expected. A new video section will be created outside the news feed which will display the original programs. This would, in turn, be beneficial and could give the company a cut of the 44,871 crore television advertising market.
The upcoming video section will have a mix of scripted and user-generated content. However, there will be no competition between Facebook and video producers such as Netflix, Amazon, HBO and Showtime.
Facebook is focusing on producing low-cost, short-form video series in association with a few media partners. Former TV and media executives have been hired to work on original videos and continue to expand the team. The first few shows will allow Facebook to check the user’s interests. Till now, there are no long-term funding plans by the company.
Facebook has given a statement that there is more room for advertisers than the packed News Feed. This can be the major boost behind the company’s push for longer-form entertainment.
