UN’s International Court Asks Pakistan To Put Execution Order Of Kulbhushan Jadhav On Hold

Updated on 11 May, 2017 at 12:26 pm By

In what will come as a huge relief for India, the International Court of Justice in Hague, Netherlands on May 9  asked Pakistan to put the execution order of the Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav on hold until further notice.

Jadhav, who is currently locked up in a Pakistani jail, was given death sentence by a Pakistan military Court in April after being accused of being an Indian spy.

Taking quick action on the death penalty, the UN court, sent out an official letter to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif asking him to put the execution on hold.

The International Court’s response comes just a day after India filed an appeal to the court accusing Pakistan of “egregious violations of the Vienna Convention” and seeking a stay of the execution.

According to India, Jadhav is a retired Naval officer who was kidnapped from Iran while he was running a business and then brought to Pakistan.

Taking quick action into the matter External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj also met Bert Koenders, the visiting foreign minister of Netherlands on May 9.

She also tweeted about the meeting and said that she has already informed Jadhav’s mother about the International Court’s order.

According to India’s appeal to the UN,  since his arrest, Jadhav has not been given any consular access and they only found out about his death sentence from a press release.

Answering to India’s accusation, Pakistan had in the past said that consular access is only given to civilian prisoners under a 2008 agreement and since Jadhav was caught spying for R&AW, he is not entitled to it.

According to Pakistan Jadhav was arrested on March 3, 2016, from the restive Balochistan province.
