What Message Is Pakistan Sending By Beheading Two Indian Soldiers On Day Of Erdogan’s Visit?

Published on 1 May, 2017 at 6:16 pm By

Pakistan did it again. Their troops beheaded two Indian soldiers at the LoC near Poonch after violating the ceasefire the eighth time in a month.

Hours after the Pakistani army did the ghastly and cowardly act, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is on a visit to India, extended his country’s “full solidarity” in fighting terrorism.

So will Erdogan keep his word? Things will become clearer based on what kind of agreements are signed between Turkey and India and depending on who exactly Erdogan considers “terrorists”.

But even before he had arrived in India, Erdogan had raised a storm by stating his desire to mediate between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir issue – a subject that even the world’s great powers think can be discussed bilaterally only.

Erdogan said:

“We shouldn’t allow more casualties to occur (in Jammu & Kashmir). And by strengthening multilateral dialogues, we can be involved. And through the multilateral dialogues, we have to seek out for ways to settle this question once and for all, which will provide benefits to both of the countries.”

And in the interview where he made the remark, Erdogan addressed Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as “dear friend”.

Analysts are reading his comment on Kashmir and effusive praise for Sharif as a hindrance to any advancement in India’s ties with Turkey under Erdogan.

What is particularly noteworthy is that Pakistani army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa had visited LoC only yesterday and accused India of creating tensions in Kashmir. He had said that the Pakistani army will “always stand by their (Kashmiri’s) rightful political struggle for the right of self-determination and recourse to basic human rights”.

This was a clear indication that Pakistan is not in the mood for talks, dialogues or any ‘Aman ki Aasha’ façade. All it wants is create conflict in South Asia using Kashmir as a pretext. And Pakistan’s terrorist-backing ISI and military establishment need not worry about Turkey because Sharif is a “dear friend” of Erdogan.

By calling Sharif a man with “good intentions” while claiming that he has been “discussing these (Kashmir) issues at length”, Erdogan is ignoring the brutalities committed by Islamabad in Baluchistan as well as on the people of Pak-occupied Kashmir.

Pakistan knows it has friends in Islamic republics, Islamist countries and dictatorial Islamic rulers, who control the oil wealth and are therefore economically advanced.

When he visited Pakistan in November 2016, senior military officials were present during his address to Pakistan’s parliament. That speaks about the level of friendship Erdogan-led Turkey has with Pakistan.

Erdogan has just gained, quite ironically through democratic means, sweeping powers that many claim is akin to that of a dictator. This is why Twitterati and editorial columns, including those in Pakistan, are heavily criticizing Jamia Milia Islamia’s decision in honoring Erdogan with a doctorate.

There was even an online petition urging Jamia not to confer the doctorate on Erdogan.

So how does Erdogan expect multilateral talks with Islamabad when Pakistan itself indulged in a cowardly action on the day of his visit to New Delhi and how will his country help India in tackling terror? Perhaps Erdogan himself has no answer to this question because it terror is housed by Islamabad and Pakistan is nothing but a rouge country headed by his “best friend”.
