Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi created history when they walked down the aisle a decade ago. In that one moment, they became a symbol of hope for gay people the world over.
And now, a decade later, that hope looks about ready to be snuffed out. Reports suggest that Ellen and Portia, the royal couple of the LGBT community, are headed towards a divorce. The couple is preparing to sell their homes ahead of a break up, according to reports. Assets worth $58.6m have been put up for sale. The wheels look as if they’ve been set in motion.
Strangely, this news seems to be affecting me much more than I could’ve imagined possible. Maybe because in a world that is rapidly turning more hateful, more homophobic, every passing day, Ellen and Portia became a symbol of more than just hope. They became a symbol of love triumphing over hate. Of what it looks like when you fight for love, and win.
Perhaps that is why news of their impending divorce comes as a crushing blow to those of us who believe in the freedom to follow your heart, love who you will, and live as you choose. Because it is we who know what it feels like to not have that freedom. Because in this twisted world of ours, too many people, gay and straight, don’t get to be with the people they love.
Ellen and Portia spent more than a decade together. That’s more than most of us could ever dream of. And therein lies the tragedy.
