Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, starring Sonam Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, and Juhi Chawla, became the talk of the town right after its trailer was unveiled a couple of weeks ago. Though the makers did not quite openly talk about the core premise of the movie, the trailer dropped enough hints for us to figure out what was the film all about. So, let’s find out whether or not the movie lives up to our expectations.

What’s ELKDTAL All About?

It’s all about love, but with some twists and turns. Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga revolves around a small-town Punjabi girl Sweety Chaudhary (Sonam Kapoor) and her doting father Balbir Chaudhary (Anil Kapoor). Theirs seems to be a happy family if you look at it from outside, but as you come closer, you meet a reticent, lonely and misunderstood girl who is struggling with the turmoil of being a homosexual woman in a heterosexually-dominated society.

One fine day, Sweety meets playwright Sahil Mirza (Rajkummar Rao) who follows her from Delhi to Punjab. Sahil is in love with her and wants to be with her forever, but as he comes to know about Sweety’s well-guarded truth, he is shocked to no end. To know what happens next, you got to book your tickets now.

What Makes ELKDTAL an unmissable watch?

If the majority of us in India look down upon the vibrant LGBTQ community, Bollywood is certainly to be blamed to a certain extent, as it has for decades portrayed them as objects of cheap laughs, disgrace, and ignominy. Thankfully, the LGBTQ themed narratives in Indian cinema have now started witnessing a positive change with new filmmakers looking at the community and their issues through a new prism, and debutante Shelly Chopra Dhar’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is the best and latest example of that.

Shelly, who has co-written the film with transgender Gazal Dhaliwal, has come up with a movie that portrays a queer love story the way it should be, without falling prey to done to death stereotypes. The best part of the film is its lucid story, punctuated by meaningful dialogues and a little slack but subtle screenplay. The director has made each and every artist of her film to bring their best to the table. Her grip over scenes laden with emotions is incredible. The first half of the film is breezy, while the second one is full of loads of emotions.

Talking about performances, each and every actor has done their best. Sonam Kapoor nails her part and is a revelation as Sweety. After Neerja (2016), she delivers yet another award-winning performance in ELKDTAL. Anil Kapoor is terrific as usual. His jhakaas performance wins your heart in no time. The actor has got some amazing scenes to perform and he pulls them off with great ease. The film marks the maiden collaboration between the real-life father-daughter duo of Anil and Sonam, and their chemistry in the movie is to die for.

Rajkummar Rao also gets a meaty role to play and he makes it adorable with his charm and candor. Juhi Chawla is in excellent form, too. Her scenes with Rajkummar Rao will warm the cockles of your heart. In short, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga will be remembered as one of the best-performed films of 2019.

Final Verdict

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga does not try to hammer any heavy message into your head. However, it does make you think and change your perception about a particular community for better. If you are game for a message-driven offering which is a bit emotionally-charged, you will enjoy this coming-of-age drama.
