An earthquake of 5.8 magnitude hit north India at around 10.35 pm on Monday. The epicentre was near Rudraprayag in Uttarakhand around 21 kilometers deep beneath the mountains.
Tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR and other nearby places for distances as far as 500 kilometers away.
Rudraprayag is about 100 kilometeres from Dehradun.
The exact point of the earthquake as per USGS is Pipalkoti. The town in Uttarakhand has a population of 2000. It is just 40 kilometers from Joshimath.

The earthquake is one of the many that has been striking the entire Himalayan belt because of the increasing collision of India and Eurasia plate. Due to this constant push between the plates, the entire Himalayan belt is one of the most seismically dangerous places on Earth.

Since the quake happened in the hills, the risk of damage to people and property is very high. The Centre has already dispatched two NDRF teams to Uttarakhand.
