An assistant professor of Delhi University has been booked for insulting Hindu goddess Durga and hurting the sentiments of Hindus. Kedar Kumar Mandal is a professor of DU’s Dyal Singh College. Though the alleged words of the professor demeans the faith of millions in India, an official police complaint was filed by National Democratic Teachers Front (NDTF). The post has also been condemned by the ABVP. Even the NSUI has demanded his dismissal from DU administration.
According to the complaint, Mandal used derogatory language for Ma Durga in a Facebook post on September 22. The post has now been deleted.
But Twitter influencers had already posted screenshots of the FB post and tagged authorities demanding strict action against Mandal.

Worse has been said of Hindu gods and goddesses by Hindus. What is worrisome is that a tax-funded DU professor can’t spell ‘mythology’. pic.twitter.com/rjLuNZFNzb

Some Twitter users also posted other derogatory comments allegedly made by Mandal:

Tajinder Bagga pointed at his association with Rahul Gandhi:

According to The Hindu, Mandal has been booked under section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, etc.) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting religious beliefs).
The police are looking if his post violates sections of IT Act. Mandal is handicapped.
While it is noteworthy that alert Twitter users raised the matter and brought it to the notice of the police, there remains an eerie silence from those Twitter influencers across the media and civil society who chest-thump about secularism.
