The pursuit of success has never been easy. The path to prosperity is paved with a number of hurdles and it takes insurmountable courage. At least this is what the success stories of inspiring personalities tell us. Dr. Vijay Sankeshwar is one such person who did not have a huge inheritance from his family but the one-track mind of a businessman.
Dr. Vijay Sankeshwar was expected to take care of his family’s printing business. However, his heart didn’t comply with this and he started his own transport business with one truck bought with borrowed funds. At that time, he was just a 16-year-old boy with inspiring risk-taking ability.
His decision was not welcomed by his family but his ordeal didn’t end there as he faced resistance from the people already established in the transportation world. He was a potential threat and other businessmen could see it in the confidence of young Vijay Sankeshwar. He recalls those times and says,
With no communication access to reach the drivers once they hit the road, I had no clue when the cargo would reach the customer, till the trucks came back safe. Handling drivers was not easy. I suffered severe losses and frequent accidents of vehicles. Not deterred by these setbacks, I worked hard to reach my goal.
Dr. Sankeshwar started his transportation business in 1976 at Hubli with one truck but moved to Gadag in 1992 where he started a courier business. Soon enough he had 120 vehicles with a turnover of around Rs. 4 crore. Now, his VRL group has a conglomerate business model consisting transportation, passenger buses, windmills, media house, etc. He has nearly 20,000 employees working under him.
He entered the media business with Kannada daily, Vijaya Karnataka, in 1999 which was sold to the Times Group in 2006. Dr. Sankeshwar then started the Kannada daily, Vijayavani, which is now a leading newspaper in Karnataka. The business mogul has been a recipient of multiple prestigious awards such as Udyog Ratna, Aryabhatta Award, etc. He was also conferred with an honorary Doctorate by Karnataka University in 2014.
