Being a democratic nation USA has walked on the grounds where discrimination could be eliminated, if not from grassroots but at-least from the system they are building for new generation.
As a White House ‘tradition’, an iftar dinner has been hosted for Muslims at the end of Ramzan month. But reports say that this year Donald Trump has declined to host such a dinner.
All Muslims around the world observe fast during the month of Ramzan and open it with iftar dinner at sunset of the last day. The so-called ‘tradition’ of hosting dinner at White House was started in 1996 by former First Lady Hillary Clinton.
White House Democrats spend months in planning and execution of this grand evening dinner, inviting and honoring people from the Muslim community. What was started by Clinton was followed by Bush and Obama as well.
The White House, however, issued a statement late on Saturday evening wishing Muslims on Eid:
“Muslims in the United States joined those around the world during the holy month of Ramadan to focus on acts of faith and charity. Now, as they commemorate Eid with family and friends, they carry on the tradition of helping neighbors and breaking bread with people from all walks of life. During this holiday, we are reminded of the importance of mercy, compassion, and goodwill. With Muslims around the world, the United States renews our commitment to honor these values. Eid Mubarak.”
Trump’s critics claim that there should be no religious ceremonies in or on any government property and there must maintain the separation of church and state at all costs. This means not celebrating Christmas either in White House or giving equal regard to all religions.
Some US mainstream media houses reported that former President Thomas Jefferson had hosted an Iftar dinner in December 1805 in honor of Tunisian ambassador Sidi Soliman Mellimelli. But another US online portal, Breitbart, pointed out that Jefferson hadn’t actually held an Iftar dinner but merely changed the time of dinner to suit his guest.
The dinners hosted by former presidents Clinton and George W. Bush were politically motivated. President George W Bush, hosted the dinner just after the 9/11 attacks. He said at the dinner that the fight was against terrorism, not Islam.
Only Obama hosted the dinner out of courtesy to Muslims. President Obama had said,”Muslim Americans have been part of our American family since its founding.”
American Muslims were a holding a candle of hope this year as well regarding the invitation of Iftar dinner but this news has shocked them. To them this dinner serves as a symbol of unity and peace.
Donald Trump has been on the wrong side of news for matters related to Muslim community, especially after banning the entry of citizens from seven predominantly Muslim nations in January 2017.
