Whether or not Donald Trump harbours any affection for Indians in his heart, he certainly has fans in India.
On May 11, a group organized a havan and puja for Trump’s victory.
Sanskrit mantras were chanted to appease the Gods so that they favour Trump in the elections that will be held in November this year.
Trump will certainly be the Republican candidate for this year’s election but his acerbic comments on Muslims have not gone down well with a section of America’s Liberal-Secular intelligentsia.
To the group in India, however, Trump is the only one who can help tackle Islamic terrorism.
“The whole world is screaming against Islamic terrorism, and even India is not safe from it,” said Vishnu Gupta, founder of the group that organized the ceremony. “Only Donald Trump can save humanity.”
Trump has been criticized for his anti-Muslim comments especially after the Paris terror attacks.
He has just stated that his “ban on Muslims” was just a suggestion.
Following the November 2015 attacks on the French capital that left 130 dead, Trump exhorted the banning of Muslims from United States.
Trump’s ‘hatred’ for Muslims has been discussed in this Quora post, with most of them calling him an opportunist, a rabble-rouser and a self-conceited man.
Trump has often blamed Indians for taking away jobs from the United States.
In April 2016, Trump had mimicked an Indian’s voice to highlight how jobs in US have now been taken up by outsiders.
Yet despite all of Trump’s failings, prayers are being held for his victory here in India.
