Rio Olympics: Top Contenders Novak Djokovic And William Sisters Knocked Out Early

Day two of Rio Olympics turned out to be a dramatic day in Tennis, as leading contenders in the event were knocked out early.

While world No.1 Novak Djokovic was left in tears after being defeated 7-6 7-6 by Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro, women’s doubles event saw Serena and Venus Williams suffer a shocking defeat in the first round itself.


It is also turning out to be a weird experience for Del Potro, who had spent 40 minutes stuck in an elevator a day before.


Quickly recovering from the horrifying  experience, Del Potro put up an amazing performance to register an impressive victory against the world number 1.

Though thoroughly disappointed, Novak appreciated Del Potro’s performance and said:

Meanwhile, the Wiliams sisters, who won the women’s Olympic doubles title in 2000, 2008 and 2012, were stunned in the first round.

The Czech pairing of Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova defeated the top pair 6-4 6-2 in straight sets in a match that lasted 93 minutes.
