This smartphone generation is running out of words. Thank God, we have emojis, emoticons, and smileys.

There were times when words did all the magic, and now, these small graphics say the unspoken words, and express the most private feelings in an instant, which we are otherwise afraid to show. But sometimes, they hide true intentions.

Still, we are madly in love with them, and we use them hundred times a day, precisely after every sentence we text. 🙂

As we are endlessly lost in texting our baes and besties all through the day, we don’t really care about to know the real meaning of emoticons, emojis or smileys.

Well, to start with, they are three different things. Surprised?

An emoticon is a typographic display of a facial representation and used to convey emotion in a text only medium. Like:

Whereas, a smiley is a stylized representation of a smiling face that became popular in 1962, comprising of a yellow circle with two black dots representing eyes and a black arc representing the mouth.

It was created by Harvey Ross Ball, an American graphic artist.

It was only when the Internet came, smileys got a makeover, and we created emoticons and emojis.

And now, the latest fad is emojis. This is, undoubtedly, the most entertaining way to express an emotion.

Emoji is a pictorial representation. From a smiling face with heart eyes to a female flamenco dancer, they are all categorized under emojis, not emoticons.

I hope the confusion ends now.
