DG Vanzara, the former IPS officer accused in the alleged fake encounters of Sohrabuddin Shaikh, Tulsiram Prajapati and Ishrat Jahan, returned to a hero’s reception in his home state of Gujarat after nine years.
He spent eight of those nine years in prison – seven in Sabarmati Jail and one in Mumbai.
Vanzara was granted bail in the Sheikh and Prajapati cases in March 2014. In February 2015, he was granted bail in Ishrat Jahan case too but the condition that he will not be able to enter Gujarat was modified only on April 2 with a new condition stipulating that he will have to appear before the court every Saturday.
The former top cop calls this his “new innings” and has vowed to go after those who falsely accused him and his fellow officers.
Calling those who went after him “deshdrohi” politicians, Vanzara said that he now wields the bat and will make those politicians run.
Addressing a huge gathering at the Town Hall in Gandhinagar, where chants of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ reverberated through the air, Vanzara said that New Delhi was aware of IB inputs and yet the cases were “created” against him and his fellow officers.
Vanzara also danced at the reception organised for him.

The breather for Vanzara comes after 26/11 Mumbai terrorist David Coleman Headley deposed before a US court stating that Ishrat Jahan was a LeT operative.
Jahan and three others were shot dead on June 15, 2004, when Vanzara was the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).
In the recent past, some former top bureaucrats have alleged that the then Home Minister P Chidambaram dropped references of Ishrat Jahan’s links to LeT and that they were forced to sign such affidavits.
Vanzara was arrested on April 24, 2007 in connection to the Sohrabuddin Sheikh case and was later charged with the other cases. The cop retired in 2014.
At his reception were some former top cops of the state as well as some serving officers. Vanzara declared that he is entering public life and will serve Gujarat’s needs.
